So, I’m very jazzed right now (thanks Phil), you see I am learning guitar. My dad was awesome with it and after he went to be with Jesus I got his guitar. I always wanted him to teach me, but it was one of those things we kinda put off. I was like, “Well someday we’ll get around to it.” You know, you just never think you’ll run out of time for that stuff with your dad so soon.
Well, anyay I don’t have an actual teacher because guit lessons are super pricey out here. I don’t mind admitting - that makes it really hard for me to make much progress verfy fast. I can memorize the chords really quick, but my chord changes are still - sooooo - S L O W. Ugh!!! Obviously, that makes playing songs sound not so hot. I have been trying to do one minute changes to get my chords flowing into each other real smooth… to no avail. Today I was just thinking that maybe if I could learn the chords to a song I love it might help me. Then, lo and behold… up pops your “Cannons - A Lesson” post. Yea. So I’m off to give it a try. I am SO happy for this little blessing. God is so sweet like that, isn’t He?!
I think what you are doing is amazing! God Bless you and your ministry.

Phil you rock man, is there anyway you could maybe show us how to play some of your other songs, because I would love to know how, and I’m sure others would as well.
Melody—I taught myself how to play guitar as well and you have to be really patient with yourself. Some people told me that chord changes and whatnot would spring on me overnight after much practice, but that is not how it was for me. I practiced hours a day and checked out books at the library to further my learning. I learned bar chords from the get go so that I would learn the correct way. In other words, I experienced a lot of pain! The one thing that I was not very good with was being able to find the time to play alongside others. I encourage you to do that if it means staying late after church and playing guitar with the worship team while they put music away and equipment. I have a love of reading and I gave some of that up so I could use all my time practicing guitar. Give yourself a couple of years to get the chord changes right where you want them to be. It takes a lot of practice. I also heard that playing guitar before bed gets your subconscious “practicing” while you are asleep. Not sure how accurate that is! But whatever, why not?
Thanks for the lesson, Phil. I would have to capo up a couple on G. I love that song, so it is a good one to bring up to the worship team at church.
Hey Rachel W - Thanks for the encouargement. It’s funny how I can be so patient with everyone else, but when it comes to myself I can be like a drill sergent. I appreciate your ideas, too. I’m off to practice - again.
Man, my poor fingers ache!
God bless and keep you - Melody

Anyone know where I can hear an audio version of Phil’s song “Because of Your Love”? I heard him do it last week at CC Costa Mesa, and I love that song!
I found some chord charts, but I am having a hard time remembering the voicing for the bridge… I’d like to hear it, even a bootleg version if possible.
For a “Because of Your Love” audio (for free, too) go to http://www.maranathachapel.org Then, after the homepage has loaded go to the bottom left - hand corner to “Music of Maranatha.” Click on the little box that’s #5 and you’ll hear “Because of Your Love.” I agree, this is an awesome song. Enjoy!
