Phil thanks for throwing this up here. There are a lot of tutorials for your songs around youtube and what not but it’s nice to learn from you personally. Hopefully more videos like this will come in the future
oh and i cant find out even close on how to play Sailing on a Ship. If you could play that sometime it would mean sssooo much!!! Just when i was at a small christian coffee shop in Indiana listing to you explain on the Chronicles of Narnia influence behind the song. That was amazing, since im on my 15th time through the series. So Sailing on a ship! thanks SO much for your ministry again.

hey man.thanks so much. I love it so much when you post videos on songs you play. Thanks your music has been such an influence in my life and my music life(well actualy the Lords through me). Ive picked up on all of them that you play in a video online. Thanks so much for doing these videos.
Thanks, Phil! That was great – not confusing at all. : )
Half way through watching the video i thought to myself, ” wait a second! where’s my guitar?” so i grabbed it and played along for the rest of the video. : ) cool.
Blessings…
Hey Rachel W – Thanks for the encouargement. It’s funny how I can be so patient with everyone else, but when it comes to myself I can be like a drill sergent. I appreciate your ideas, too. I’m off to practice – again.
Man, my poor fingers ache!
Melody—I taught myself how to play guitar as well and you have to be really patient with yourself. Some people told me that chord changes and whatnot would spring on me overnight after much practice, but that is not how it was for me. I practiced hours a day and checked out books at the library to further my learning. I learned bar chords from the get go so that I would learn the correct way. In other words, I experienced a lot of pain! The one thing that I was not very good with was being able to find the time to play alongside others. I encourage you to do that if it means staying late after church and playing guitar with the worship team while they put music away and equipment. I have a love of reading and I gave some of that up so I could use all my time practicing guitar. Give yourself a couple of years to get the chord changes right where you want them to be. It takes a lot of practice. I also heard that playing guitar before bed gets your subconscious “practicing” while you are asleep. Not sure how accurate that is! But whatever, why not?
Thanks for the lesson, Phil. I would have to capo up a couple on G. I love that song, so it is a good one to bring up to the worship team at church.
Phil you rock man, is there anyway you could maybe show us how to play some of your other songs, because I would love to know how, and I’m sure others would as well.
So, I’m very jazzed right now (thanks Phil), you see I am learning guitar. My dad was awesome with it and after he went to be with Jesus I got his guitar. I always wanted him to teach me, but it was one of those things we kinda put off. I was like, “Well someday we’ll get around to it.” You know, you just never think you’ll run out of time for that stuff with your dad so soon.
Well, anyay I don’t have an actual teacher because guit lessons are super pricey out here. I don’t mind admitting – that makes it really hard for me to make much progress verfy fast. I can memorize the chords really quick, but my chord changes are still – sooooo – S L O W. Ugh!!! Obviously, that makes playing songs sound not so hot. I have been trying to do one minute changes to get my chords flowing into each other real smooth… to no avail. Today I was just thinking that maybe if I could learn the chords to a song I love it might help me. Then, lo and behold… up pops your “Cannons – A Lesson” post. Yea. So I’m off to give it a try. I am SO happy for this little blessing. God is so sweet like that, isn’t He?!
thanks, phil.

I used to play guitar, but I kind of stoped, but that makes me want to play again.
I think what you are doing is amazing! God Bless you and your ministry.
Oh my gosh, interactive learning is back!
That’s sooooo old. Am I the only one who remembers Interactive Learning?!
But yeah I love playing this song on guitar. I remember those are the chords I got from some free download thing along with the song.
I love how it’s so simple. Like I am horrible at guitar, but I can play this song.
