Ahhh. Hahaha. Very nice. Wow. People are really overdramatic. It’s a tatoo. Even if it were real, who cares? Most girls on this plante have their ears pierced. Some might consider that a sin of the flesh because you wern’t born with holes in your lobes. Chill out, guys! Just because you don’t personally believe tatoos are good doesn’t mean you have the right to judge others for their tatoos. To each his own.
ps-You rock Phil!!!
Woah. Seriously? That had to HURT! I’m cringing right now! (I’m terrified of needles!
) High five if it’s real, high five if it ain’t. Looking forward to seeing you next Saturday in Brownwood (my roommate and I have been planning this since February I think! lol!) Anywho, sweet tatoo! Does it have any special meaning or did you just think it was cool?
i am also bummed out how you guys really took this over the top. wow.
if you were a real follower of his music you should know his heart and where he stands with the Lord, so its ridiculous how you would actually, publicly feel the right to rebuke him on his own blog when it was actually a joke. i hope you feel salty now lol
love you Phil. thanks for what you do brotha!
Cheers
I LOVE IT!!!
Aubury, you said, “We are free in Christ!” Free to do what? Whatever we think is okay. No! We are free to do what is right! Galations 5 says, “19Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality,20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control; against such things there is NO LAW.
-Kole
Sarah you said:” I think it’s awesome and as long as it’s not “bad” or “nasty” Well who decides if it’s nasty? The person who get’s it? That is the problem of our culter today; anything you want to do is right for you as long as you don’t affend anyone? Funny, I have never heard an unbeliever complain that “Christian” tattoos are offensive. It looks just like the world.

Romans 14:3-10, 18, 22 (New King James Version)
3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. 4 Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.
5 One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. 6 He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. 7 For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. 8 For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. 10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
18 For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and
approved by men.
22 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before the God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves.
-Basically, he who feels he has the liberty to get a tattoo, do it of the Lord, likewise, he who does not have that liberty, don’t do it. It’s okay.
Jesus didn’t follow the old law at all times. He just loved the Father and loved people. That’s all that is required of us.
We are free in Christ!
Can I just say how amazing it is that people are actually having theological debates over this? You probably paid $4.99 for that fake sleeve huh Phil? For real man…I’m stoked about the new album! keep the video updates comin!
Hey, I love it. How long did it take?
Remember that it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks about it/you. All that matters is that you are a child of God. A tattoo cannot ruin your testimony, its the attitude and soul behind it that represents who you are. Tattoos are art. I think it’s awesome and as long as it’s not “bad” or “nasty” and you and your wife like it. That’s all..I like it though.
Love your music, because you sing to and for God not for anyone. And I feel that in your words. Keep praising God.
God Bless,
sm
Phil! You’re music is incredible. I am amazed at how you sing completely of Jesus and glorify Him in all your songs. You manage to worship Him and maintain contemporary great sounding songs! Truly God has blessed You.
Anyways, about the tat. I have to agree with Mike that it’s a sharpie tat. If you copy and paste the picture from his “In The Studio (Part 4)” blog post with he, Brandon Lozano, and Pete Kipley at the drum set into Microsoft Word (or anything else that allows you to zoom) you can zoom in on his left wrist. In the tat picture he is holding his wrist and you can see about two inches of his left wrist in both pictures. In the drum picture, which was about 9 days after the “tat” picture there is no markings. Couple that with the fact that Phil’s a very artistic guy with lots of down time during travels between shows and you’ve got yourself a sharpie tattoo.
For those who “lost respect” for Phil’s (fake) tatoo:
(From Lev. 19)
- Do you wear clothing woven of two different materials?
- Have you ever eaten meat with blood still in it? (a rare steak, perhaps??)
- eaten fruit from a tree you’ve planted?
- Ever cut your hair at the sides of your head?
- Ever trim your beard?
-
(from Deut 22)
- make a parapet around your roof after you move into your new place?
-wear clothes of wool and linen woven together?
- put tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wear?
When my husband decided to get a tatoo describing his conversion experience he came across another believer who told him it was a sin and brought up the passage in Leviticus.
This guy refuses to talk to my husband now.
My hubby uses his tat to tell others about how he came to know Jesus. (many folks ask him about it).
Oh My!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This can’t be real……..
hahha way to get people rattled up!:) i think you would be a sissy lala to get a tattoo that sized!!! maybe of a heart or a tiny flower or something !:) and its kinda funny you leave us wondering if its real or not becuase your next pics you are wearing long sleeve!
Ha! Doesn’t look real! Looks like one of those henna tats or a fake sleeve. But if it is real, ouch! lol =)
phil!?? whaaaa? haha crazyy tat it honestly doesnt even look real. haha but i love tats so obviously its cool.
yay for tattoos and for phil!
haha that is awesome! = ]
i really don’t want to get into this… but i gotta.
if we look at the context of GOD talking about tattoos in the old testament… we can see that HE was talking to the israelites and the time they were still really intertwined with egyptian culture. the egyptians used tattoos for sexual rituals and would also tattoo their gods on themselves. when GOD told the israelites not to get tattoos, HE was telling to not be like the egyptians, don’t do what they do, because you are MY people.
so, are tattoos wrong? no. but the question is, what are your motives? i don’t have any tattoos… yet, but i know GOD won’t smite you for having one.
you rock boss!
sharpies = rad.
(Lisa – AMEN to you too!)
leviticus 19:28 is basically the Bible verse i’m talking about.
and i stick to what i said earlier that God means what He says whether it is in the old or the new testament. Jesus did not destroy the old covenant – he fulfilled it. the laws of both the old and the new testament are there to guide us through life. we have to stop being naive and think that we can live just as we like and as it pleases us. when we have given our lives to Jesus Christ, we are called to be Christlike and holy (1 peter 1:16), and not like the world we live in (1 john 2:15-17). we are called to do the Fathers will (john 15:14), not our own will.
so, dear phil wickham, i’m sure you understand that this is not and issue of me judging you or anyone else, or saying who is more loved by God – we know that God loves us all the same and that we are all just as sinful before Him and we all desperately need his Grace every day. but when you ask me what i think about a tattoo, i have to be honest, whether it”s a joke or not. i’m sure you’re a nice person (i actually think we have some friends in common) (:
(and for the record: one of my best friends has a tattoo)
God bless you all!
haha, that is not a real tatoo
looks good phil!! haha
but um ok wow..are some of you serious right now? i mean for real..i never would have thought this funny picture would turn into people saying bad things about philly wick…seriously, not cool peeps! phil’s music has made a huge turn around for my life and many others, ive met him many times and have talked with him, and he is one of the best people ive ever met. for you to say that you lost respect for someone like phil, that is YOUR loss..that is just bogas. especially for the fact whether if its a joke or not, it would be up to phil what he wants to do, and your opinion wont change it. when people say bad things about phil, i get offended b/c im a huge fan of his and this man’s music gets me through everyday of my life. so for you people who are saying all this stuff, back off. if phil wants none, one, or a ton of tattoos, you arent the people who will help make his decision. i hope he posts a blog saying its real, b/c im sure your little opinion will make a huge affect…not.
anywho, now that that is over, i thought it was a good one phil. whether real or not. haha. you are AMAZING and super funny. dont let these comments make you think any one bit less at all about yourself (especially for the fact that its a joke, haha), you are a great man of God and i couldnt think of anyone better to look up to.
hope to see you soon philly!
~Amanda~*phil phan* (another joke, uh oh..) haha.
God Bless!
p.s. i cant wait to hear some new tunes for the new record <33
At the end of the day, I think that God wants us to be a discerning people. Deciphering right from wrong and issuing tough love when needed. Not ones that condemn others for their actions, but ones who act as agents of restoration. Jesus was always about restoring others to right standing with Him even if they did make a mistake. Not that I think Phil made a mistake.. he made a joke that has been blown out of proportion. And even if he really got a tattoo.. so what! God doesn’t love him less and neither do I.
A lot of valid points have been made on this blog, but again discernment is the key. To me, Phil reminds me of David, he has a heart after God. And because he does… I believe the picture he posted was in good fun. Rather than get our blood pressure up, lets just laugh it off and continue about are business.
Hey phil, it’s beautiful mate. glad you went all out with it hey! keep on singing with that amazing tri-octave voice of yours. Peace.
I’m disappointed and shocked at some of these comments.
Guy’s this is Phil we’re talking about here! Phil I just want you to know that I would never ever lose respect for you over tattoo. You’ve been a wonderful role model to me and your music has made such an impact on my life that I just want to say thank you. May God bless you in all your endeavors and again I CAN’T WAIT for the new album!
Your sister in Christ,
Rebecca.
Love ya Phil! I am glad that God has given you a heart that wants to follow him and be a light shining in a dark world! Carry on!
-Kole
P.S. About my previous comments, I did not mean to say that it is unbiblical to get a tattoo. I would rather be friends with someone who has a tattoo and has a heart for God, than someone who does not have a tattoo and is one who does not have a whole heart for God! The heart is what matters! Tattoo’s are just external expressions, but we need to ask the question, “Why do you (or I) want one?” “Is it something that would Glorify Christ more than not getting one?” Is this going to to help my profession of faith, or make my testimony less impacting?”
